Spray-dried aloe vera powder: 200x and 100x ratios explained
What 200:1 and 100:1 mean for spray-dried aloe vera powder, how to reconstitute it, how to calculate dose rates, and what to check on the spec.

Spray-dried aloe vera powder is the most concentrated and the easiest to ship of all aloe ingredients. It is also the form where labels are most often misread. “200x” does not mean “200 times stronger” in any effect sense. It is a statement about water removed. This guide explains the ratios and the arithmetic, and lists what to check before you order.
What the ratio means
Fresh inner leaf gel of Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) is mostly water. Spray drying removes that water and leaves the solids as a powder. The ratio tells you how much single-strength (1:1) aloe liquid one part of powder represents.
| Ratio | Also written | Reconstitution |
|---|---|---|
| 200:1 | 200x | 1 part powder + 199 parts water = 200 parts single-strength aloe |
| 100:1 | 100x | 1 part powder + 99 parts water = 100 parts single-strength aloe |
| 10:1 (liquid) | 10x | 1 part concentrate + 9 parts water = 10 parts single-strength aloe |
Suppliers in the United States usually write “200X”; many others write “200:1”. They mean the same thing.
Calculating a dose rate
The basic formula:
powder in formula (%) = target single-strength aloe equivalent (%) ÷ ratio
Examples:
- You want the equivalent of 10% single-strength aloe in a lotion. With 200x powder: 10 ÷ 200 = 0.05% powder. With 100x powder: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1% powder.
- You want a drink that is the equivalent of 50% aloe juice. With 200x powder: 50 ÷ 200 = 0.25% powder, or 2.5 g per litre.
- A capsule contains 200 mg of 200x powder. That is the solids equivalent of 200 mg × 200 = 40 g of single-strength aloe.
Two cautions:
- Carriers change the arithmetic. Some powders contain a carrier such as maltodextrin to help drying. If a “200x” powder is, for example, half carrier, then the ratio applies to the aloe solids only, or the supplier has already corrected for it. Ask how the ratio is defined on the technical data sheet.
- Ratios are not quality grades. A 200x powder is not “better” than a 100x powder. They are different concentrations. Compare quality on the parameters below, not on the ratio.
Spray-dried vs freeze-dried
| Spray-dried | Freeze-dried | |
|---|---|---|
| Process | Liquid is atomised into hot air and dries in seconds | Liquid is frozen and the ice removed under vacuum |
| Particle | Fine, free-flowing powder | Flakes or powder after milling |
| Carrier | Sometimes used | Usually not needed |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
ACAP produces spray-dried powders.
How to dissolve it
- Add powder slowly to the water phase while stirring, to avoid lumps.
- Dissolve at room temperature where possible.
- Add the preservative system of your formula once the powder is in solution. Once reconstituted, the aloe is a water-based solution and needs the same protection as any water phase.
- For drink mixes and sachets, blend the powder with the other dry ingredients first.
What to check on the specification
| Parameter | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Plant part (inner leaf or whole leaf) | Changes composition and aloin risk |
| Ratio and how it is defined | Needed for your dose calculation |
| Carrier and its percentage | Affects the ratio and the ingredient declaration |
| Decolorized or natural | Decides the aloin level; see decolorized vs natural aloe |
| Aloin | Restricted in many food uses; a common QA parameter |
| Polysaccharides (and method) | A common quality marker; methods differ, so compare like with like |
| Moisture | Powder stability and caking |
| Microbiology | Total plate count, yeasts and moulds, pathogens |
| Heavy metals | Required by most supplement and food buyers |
| Organic status | The certificate must list the powder as a product |
Packaging and storage
Aloe powder takes up moisture from the air. Typical practice is a sealed liner or foil bag inside a drum or carton, stored cool and dry and closed tightly after each use. Your supplier’s data sheet gives the actual shelf life and storage conditions.
Shipping advantage
A 200x powder replaces 200 times its weight in single-strength liquid. That makes air freight practical for buyers far from the farm, and it removes most of the cost of shipping water.
ACAP powders
ACAP produces spray-dried inner leaf powders at 200:1 and 100:1, in organic and natural grades, with decolorized and preservative-free options. Our powders are made from Aloe barbadensis Miller grown and processed on our certified-organic plantation in Limpopo, South Africa. See spray-dried powder 200x and 100x or request a sample and TDS.
